The Church of St. Catherine
The Church of St. Catherine
Churches
It is a single-nave rectangular building with a large semi-circular apse, the layout plan of which indicates the potential Old Christian foundation. The exhibitions of various topics take place in the church each summer. There is a historical curiosity associated with the church. Namely, the first fire brigade on the Island of Rab which had 16 members, stored the firefighting equipment which was part of the Italian military fire brigade in the Church of St. Catherine that served as a storehouse until the construction of the fire station in 1946.
However, there are other testimonies related to this curiosity, such as the one of the surrender of Italy in 1943, following the liberation of the concentration camp in Kampor from which the Bergoni fire pump was taken, together with the remaining firefighting equipment. The pump was hidden inside the Nimira Palace stone monument collection (Cro. lapidarij) in the Town of Rab. The reports mention that this was the first piece of equipment of the Rab Fire Brigade.
