THE LARGEST SQUARE INSIDE THE OLD TOWN CENTRE FACING THE TOWN PORT
Today, this is the largest square to be located inside the old town centre completely facing the north and the town port. It has obtained its final shape following a number of reconstructions and demolitions of historical buildings and the constructions of mostly inappropriate buildings. During the Roman period urban renewal, the square was facing the walls and the port as in the Middle Ages until the demolition of the town wall at the end of the 19th century. On the eastern and western side of the square there were two tall square towers, with the former being fortified by a semi-circular bastion Revelin in the 16th c.
THE DUKE'S PALACE IS SITUATED HERE, WHICH HAS BEEN THE SEAT OF THE POLITICAL POWER OF RAB
There were gated facing the wharf i the western tower used for galleys and small boats. The southern walls of the square included a row of typical urban houses, mostly two-storey houses built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles. At the eastern corner, the Dominis Family palace is situated today. On the western side, there is the Duke's palace complex of buildings which form the corner of the bottom of Donja ulica (the Lower Street) and the front side of the square. The Duke's Palace building complex has always been the seat of the political power and local government. The core at the base of the tower is square in shape with the Romanesque and Gothic transitional style elements. The oldest part of the complex is the building in Donja (Lower) Street with large Romanesque biforas on the first floor.
THE GALLEYS AND COASTAL SHIPS WERE DOCKING HERE IN THE PAST AND TODAY IT IS A MODERN YACHT PORT
The square was very vivid and was the centre of the social life at the time when its shoreline was the main town port where all the coastal ships used to dock. The picturesque Revelin Fortress was demolished for this purpose, and the new promenade was built on the top of the peninsula.
