THE GREENEST AND THE MOST FORESTED ISLAND
The Island of Rab is one of the greenest and the most forested islands. The vast Kalifront Forest covers the area of 1270 ha, with its name deriving from the expression „Capo fronte“, meaning ‘the green head’.
NUMEROUS FOREST ROADS AND PATHS
The forest is criss-crossed by numerous fire access roads, side roads and paths, making it the perfect relaxation, hiking and cycling spot.
ENERGY SOURCE INDISPENSABLE FOR LIFE
In the past, the local population of Rab was allowed to cut down only ‘the small forest’ without having to pay some charge, with the trees including heather, mulberry and Phillyrea latifolia.
PINE TREES WERE PLANTED AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY
The maritime pine seed was sown in 1862 in some areas of Kalifront and Dundo, originating from the Island of Korčula and sent by Eugen Deimel, a forestry consultant. The organised planting of pine trees continued during the period of work of the local head forester Pravdoje Belia.
THE EMERALD-GREEN ISLAND OF RAB
The indented shoreline of the Peninsula is hiding number of bays deeply recessed into the mainland, with sandy shallow water. Owing to the unique bluish-green colour of the sea in this part of the island, Rab is also called The Emerald Island.
THE MOST PRESERVED HOLM OAK FOREST IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
The Dundo Forest, the most beautiful and the most preserved holm oak forest in the entire Mediterranean is situated on the forested peninsula. The unique European natural reserve has been protected since 1949.
THE CAPO FRONTE HIKING AND CYCLING TRAIL
The Capo fronte hiking and cycling trail, which is 22.5 km long and classified as easy, stretches across the most forested part of the island. It is suitable for amateurs and families with children.
THE INTENSIVE EXPLOITATION OF THE PENINSULA
In the past, the intensive exploitation of Kalifront was performed, with the life on the island depending on it. Here, you can find the remains of medieval churches, limekilns, bauxite mines, dry stone walls, etc.
BOATERS’ PARADISE
Perhaps the ones who find the greatest pleasure in the pleasant atmosphere of pine and oak forest, as well as the warm and shallow sea are the boaters.
THE ALWAYS INTERESTING CORK OAK
Cork oak is a deciduous tree and you will find individual isolated trees of such type in the Kalifront forest. It is the most popular material used in the production of corks and was used in the past as a raw material for the manufacturing of life jackets.
