The Shore around Mount Kamenjak
The Shore around Mount Kamenjak
Otok Rab
Njivice - a unique pebble beach
An interesting site for scuba diving
Beaches at the foot of the steep and inaccessible coastline
Accessible only by sea
THE MOST RUGGED AND INACCESSIBLE COASTLINE OF THE ISLAND OF RAB, THE CLIFFS OF WHICH GO DEEP INTO THE SEA, REVEALS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT RAB, FAR AWAY FROM COMMERCIAL INFRASTRUCTURES
The slopes of Mount Kamenjak (the hill protecting the Island from the Bora wind, 408m) facing the Velebit Channel to the north are very steep and inaccessible, with a poorly indented coastline. This rugged and barren coastline of the Island of Rab, devoid of vegetation and some 20 km long still retains a lot of charm and individuality in its 15 bays and coves with sandy and pebble beaches.
HIGH COASTAL REEFS WITH JAGGED CLIFFS ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE BY LAND, BUT THEIR BEAUTY IS ASTONISHING
Here in this place the Island of Rab is hiding one of its most beautiful beaches, the pebble beach named Njivica, secluded at the foot of steep slopes of Mount Kamenjak, attracting tourists with its stunning beauty. The Bay of Mag (a beach with sand and pebbles), which is one of the larger bays, can be reached by a hiking trail from the ferry port of Mišnjak (some 1.5 km away), and the Bay of Vadiškala (some 4.5 km away) is also accessible on foot. The mountain path is very challenging, particularly during the summer months.
DIVING IN THE CRYSTAL-CLEAR VELEBIT CHANNEL IS AMAZING AND THE VISIT TO THE MEDOVA BUŽA CAVE, FORMERLY THE HABITAT OF THE ENDANGERED MEDITERRANEAN MONK SEAL IS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE
Unlike the other parts of the Island, this one is not an ideal place for swimming and leisure activities, predominantly due to its inaccessible and steep coastline, but it is suitable for scuba diving and other water activities (rich in algae and underwater vegetation, as well as a diverse marine life). One kilometre away from the most popular sandy beach in Lopar, the Paradise Beach (Cro. Rajska plaža), you will find the Medova buža cave which is 60 m long, that used to be the habitat of the Mediterranean monk seal. It is a little bit cooler on this side of the bay at the foot of Mount Kamenjak, but it doesn’t mean that the sea temperature will not reach up to 29° C, with the midday sun beating down even more intensely than in other places on the Island.
WE RECOMMEND VISITING THE COASTLINE BY BOAT IN IDEAL WEATHER CONDITIONS
The beaches of the mentioned bays are visited by the bathers coming in smaller groups by boats, mostly speedboats to enjoy the unique natural ambience of the coastline. We strongly suggest you visit the area by boat, always checking the weather forecast before you set out.
