IN THE 19TH CENTURY, THE FOREST WAS DEVASTATED AND BARREN
Up until a century or so ago, there were holm oak forests stretching across this PART OF THE Sorinj Peninsula. What once was a beautiful and lush forest area has turned into barren karst.
AFFORESTATION – THE REBIRTH OF THE SORINJ FOREST
Following its devastation, the afforestation was performed in the 1990s using the Aleppo and Coastal pine, as well as the stone pine. Today, low vegetation forest covers the southwestern part of the Peninsula along the coastline.
THE KARST WHICH IS GRADUALLY RECOVERING
Peculiar examples of the naturally grown sycamore trees grown in different places. Although their fruits are hard and inedible, they play an important role in preserving and enhancing biodiversity.
BORA IS A COLD NORTHERN WIND BLOWING IN GUSTS
The heavily overgrown pine forest provides a natural screen from the gusts of the cold and strong Bora wind blowing from the direction of Senj. What makes it more dangerous is the sleet which has got a negative effect on the plants and eventually the animals.
AIR FILLED WITH FRAGRANCES OF AROMATIC PLANTS
The aromatic plants and medicinal shrubs such as sage, immortelle and thyme coexist on the barren karst. The air is filled with herbal and marine aerosols has got a therapeutic effect on human health.
SORINJ USED TO BE A LANDFILL
There was a landfill on the Sorinj Peninsula that was recently remediated and turned into a modern sorting facility and transfer station.
THE VOTIVE CHURCH IS SITUATED AT THE PROMONTORY
At the secluded Sorinj Promontory, you will find the Votive church of st. Nicholas (Cr. Sv. Nikola), built in 1447. It was abandoned and about to collapse for some time, but today it is a pilgrimage spot accessed by road, as well as by sea.
BEAUTIFUL BEACHES, THOUGH DIFFICULT TO ACCESS
In between the rugged Sorinj and St. Nicholas promontories you will see the Marića dražica cove with a beautiful shoreline. During summer months, the other beaches on the Peninsula are crowded with speedboats and tourist boats.
REACH THE SORINJ PROMONTORY BY BIKE
There is a paved road continuing on the gavel road along the central ridge of the Peninsula. At the entrance to the Sorinj Forest, you will find the gates with the ramp that the hikers and cyclists can cross easily.
The Sorinj Forest
Sorinj
ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, THERE WAS AN OLD HOLM OAK FOREST ON THE SORINJ PENINSULA
In the far northwestern part of Kamenjak, you will find the Sorinj Forest which is completely devastated and barren and the forest land has been turned into the bare karst. Not so long ago, until a century or so ago, the old holm oak forests stretched across this area, with thick forest soil layers that were the complete opposite of what they look like today. More specifically, up to one hundred years ago, there were over 60 ha of old and lush holm oak forests in this area.
FOLLOWING THE FOREST DEVASTATION, THE BARREN KARST WAS AFFORESTED USING PINE TREES
In the 1990s, it was afforested using the Aleppo and Coastal pine, as well as the stone pine. Today, low vegetation covers the southwestern part of the Peninsula along the coastline and the lush pine forest provides a natural screen from the gusts of the cold and strong Bora wind blowing from the direction of Senj.
THE AREA WAS UNPOPULAR DUE TO THE LANDFILL
The local landfill was located at the very tip of the Peninsula. Today, it is a modern sorting facility and transfer station visible from the main road. Due to the landfill, the local population had a negative perception of Sorinj for years. According to some of them, the Sorinj Peninsula is one of the most beautiful areas of the Island of Rab, with an amazing view of the open sea.
EXPERIENCE THE RAW BEAUTY OF THE FORGOTTEN SORINJ
On the northern side of the Sorinj Promontory, you will find the medieval church of St. Nicholas (Cro. Sv. Nikola), which can be reached by the hiking and cycling path. Although this area and the Sorinj Promontory in particular appear rugged and inaccessible, it certainly hides the beauty one must experience on the Island of Rab, the island of a great landscape variety.
