The Sorinj Forest

Sorinj

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, THERE WAS AN OLD HOLM OAK FOREST ON THE SORINJ PENINSULA

In the far northwestern part of Kamenjak, you will find the Sorinj Forest which is completely devastated and barren and the forest land has been turned into the bare karst. Not so long ago, until a century or so ago, the old holm oak forests stretched across this area, with thick forest soil layers that were the complete opposite of what they look like today. More specifically, up to one hundred years ago, there were over 60 ha of old and lush holm oak forests in this area.

FOLLOWING THE FOREST DEVASTATION, THE BARREN KARST WAS AFFORESTED USING PINE TREES

In the 1990s, it was afforested using the Aleppo and Coastal pine, as well as the stone pine. Today, low vegetation covers the southwestern part of the Peninsula along the coastline and the lush pine forest provides a natural screen from the gusts of the cold and strong Bora wind blowing from the direction of Senj.

THE AREA WAS UNPOPULAR DUE TO THE LANDFILL

The local landfill was located at the very tip of the Peninsula. Today, it is a modern sorting facility and transfer station visible from the main road. Due to the landfill, the local population had a negative perception of Sorinj for years. According to some of them, the Sorinj Peninsula is one of the most beautiful areas of the Island of Rab, with an amazing view of the open sea.

EXPERIENCE THE RAW BEAUTY OF THE FORGOTTEN SORINJ

On the northern side of the Sorinj Promontory, you will find the medieval church of St. Nicholas (Cro. Sv. Nikola), which can be reached by the hiking and cycling path. Although this area and the Sorinj Promontory in particular appear rugged and inaccessible, it certainly hides the beauty one must experience on the Island of Rab, the island of a great landscape variety.
