The Tower of St. Christopher
The Tower of St. Christopher
Walls, towers and fortresses
THE NEW TOWN STARTED DEVELOPING IN THE 11TH CENTURY
What is today a densely built-up urban area inside the city walls used to be an area full of gardens and undeveloped space until the 15th c., which started developing in the 11th c. around the present-day Monastery of St. John the Evangelist (Sv. Ivan Evanđelista).
THE BEST-PRESERVED RAB WALLS
The best-preserved walls are located on the mainland and two new towers were built in the 15th c., such as the St. Christopher (Sv. Kristofor) and the Gagliarda Tower (Cro. Kula Smjelih). In between these two towers the defence double gate was built, called the propugnaculum.
A SPECTACULAR PANORAMIC VIEW
On the highest and the most protruding part of the peninsula facing the Komrčar Park is this mighty tower which used to be called tarjun among the local population, which is derived from the Venetian word torrione, meaning a big tower. It has got an irregular Medieval-style layout with a protruding corner, erected during the reconstruction following city riots and battles during the Venetian occupation in the 1520s. The stairway is leading to the Tower of St. Kristofor, with a panoramic view from the top of the town port, the unique four bell towers and the open sea.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MUNICIPAL KOMRČAR PARK IS LEANING AGAINST THE WALLS
The city walls are open on the side facing the sea and are used to reach the middle of the town park with the bust of Pravdoje Belija, the head forester from Rab who created such a masterpiece.
THE LAPIDARIUM CONTAINS A VALUABLE COLLECTION OF STONE MONUMENTS
At the foot of the Tower of St Christopher (Sv. Kristofor) yu will see the church bearing the same name, originally erected in the 14th c., which has been converted to the municipal lapidarium (stone monument collection). It used to be the centre of a numerous and powerful Fraternity of St. Christopher (Sv. Kristofor).
