Gušć from Lopar

Gušć from Lopar

Sandy soil plants growing by the Paradise Beach (Cro.Rajska plaža)

Due to its remarkable natural diversity and the geological significance of the northeastern part of Lopar, the Island was declared the significant landscape in 1969. This is the boundary between the continental and the Mediterranean vegetation belt. On the waterfront, the plants are clinging to the ground and it is shaped by sleet and the Bora wind blowing very hard in this area. On the sandy soil in the bays you will find particular sandy soil plants (Cro. local: gušć) growing and the sandy bays located on this Peninsula are unique in the world. One of the geological educational trails, which is 17 m long, passes through Lopar.

The Sorinj Forest

The Sorinj Forest

The forest is gradually recovering

At the farthest northeastern side of the Kamenjak Hill, you will find the Sorinj Forest which has been completely devastated and barren and the forest land has turned into barren karst. Up until a century or so ago, there were holm oak forests stretching across this area, with thick forest soil layers, which is a complete opposite of what it looks like today. More specifically, until a century ago, there were over 60 ha of old and lush holm oak forests in this area. The votive church of St. Nicholas, built in the 15th century, is situated on the remote Sorinj Promontory.

The Kalifront Forest

The Kalifront Forest

The greenish-blue oasis of the Island of Rab

The Kalifront Peninsula is the most forested area of the Island of Rab, criss-crossed by a number of fire access roads, side roads and paths, making it the perfect relaxation, hiking and cycling spot. Its indented coast hides numerous bays deeply recessed into the mainland, as well as the beaches overgrown with lush pine and oak forests. Some of the most beautiful sandy and rocky beaches are situated here. You can reach them by hiking and cycling trails or by boat.

The Fruga Forest

The Fruga Forest

The strikingly beautiful blend of the forest and the hidden karst valley

Fruga is a forest area covered by old holm oak trees and the barren forest land, with Fruška lokva, a unique karst oasis, situated on the clearing in the valley. Despite being cut down and deforested in the 19th century, one can find some beautiful old holm oak trees here even today. The hiking and biking trails pass through this special landscape.

The Komrčar Forest Park

The Komrčar Forest Park

A unique town garden

The Komrčar municipal park is located in the immediate proximity of the unique town centre and is one of the most beautiful forest parks in the Mediterranean. It is the most significant and the most beautiful park designed by the head forester Pravdoje Belija who planted it in 1889, despite the fact that his opponents used to uproot the seedlings. Its area is larger than the town centre, making it unique in the world.

The Dundo Forest

The Dundo Forest

The most preserved holm oak forest in the Mediterranean

In the most forested area of the Island of Rab, on the Kalifront Peninsula (Capo fronte or 'The Green Head'), with an area of 1270 ha, you will find Dundo Forest, the most beautiful and the most preserved holm oak forest in the entire Mediterranean. This unique forest reserve, protected in 1949, stretches from the coastline at the St. Christopher (Cro. Sv. Kristofor) Bay, up to 80 m above sea level, representing the greatest natural resource of the Island of Rab, alongside the sea and the beaches on the Island.

The Archipelago of Rab and it’s Islets

The Archipelago of Rab and it’s Islets

The visit to the Island of Goli otok is a particular experience. You can reach them by taxi boats, tourist boats, boats for rent, a sea kayak or swimming to some of them (Sv. Juraj, Boljkovac, Maman and Lukovac).

The Barbat Canal

The Barbat Canal

Three Padova beaches, a number of piers and the sandy beach of Pudarica

There are three sandy beaches named Padova I, Padova II and Padova III, located in the close proximity of the Town of Rab, as well as the Islet of St. George (Cro. Sv. Juraj), offering an amazing view of the Town. Along the promenade which is 8 km long, there are numerous piers for the mooring of boats, where the guests of the tourist facilities nearby sunbathe. Pudarica, located at the very edge of the Barbat Canal, is the most beautiful beach on this side of the Island of Rab, surrounded by a crystal-clear sea. There are similar, though smaller, beaches around Pudarica with a golden-yellow sand.

The Lopar Shoreline

The Lopar Shoreline

Sand paradise for people of all ages

The shoreline of the Lopar Peninsula is a paradise for sandy beach lovers, with as many as 22 sandy beaches. Due to their shallow sandy bottom, the beaches warm up quickly and the bathing season can begin much earlier than at other destinations. Most of the beaches are suitable for small children and are provided with all the necessary catering facilities. Tourists visit the remote beaches away from the towns by small boats, on foot or by bike.

The West Coast

The West Coast

From sandy beaches to islets

The western coast of the Island of Rab is indented and has got something for everyone. The shallow beach of Mel with its sandy bottom, located in Kampor, can be reached by car and is perfect for children. The islets of Šailovac, Srednjak and Mamam, visited regularly by boaters, are particularly interesting. The well-indented Gonar Peninsula has got a sandy shore, used by the tourists staying at the accommodation facilities nearby. The Sorinj Peninsula, with its rocky bays and pebble beaches, can be accessed by sea, while some beaches can be reached by bike. The area is not crowded.

The Shore around Mount Kamenjak

The Shore around Mount Kamenjak

Rugged, beautiful and accessible by boat

The northern coast of the Island of Rab is the most rugged, inaccessible and steep, with the cliffs descending straight into the sea around the Velebit Canal. The coastline is devoid of vegetation and shelter, but there are fifteen small bays and coves with pebbles and sand hidden along the coastline. It is a great spot for scuba diving and other water activities, as well as for the rowing in a sea kayak. We recommend visiting this area by boat and carefully checking the weather forecast before you set out.

The Kalifront Peninsula

The Kalifront Peninsula

The green and blue oasis of the Island of Rab

The forested Kalifront Peninsula is the most indented part of the Island and one of the most beautiful parts of the Adriatic coast. It is well-known for its well-indented coastline with numerous bays and coves, mostly ending in sandy beaches. This protected forest area and its coastline, away from urban areas, is perfect for boaters. We suggest you reach the emerald-green coves by taxi boats, by bike or a sea kayak.

The Frkanj Peninsula
